Jonathan was waiting for him when he arrived, which was no surprise. He had not been able to wipe the smile off of his face the entire stroll back to his own stateroom, and now that he was sitting across from his friend, absently thumping his hands on the arms of his chair, his attitude had not changed.

“It went well, then?” Jonathan asked. He had offered Charlie a brandy, which had been refused, a sure sign that something was different.

“She’s… incredible,” he replied with a deep sigh.

Jonathan nodded, running a hand through his dark, slightly graying, hair. “Any further information?”

“Nope.”

“A last name?’

“Nope.”

“Occupation, perhaps?”

“No. And it doesn’t matter,” Charlie replied sharply. “Whoever she is, wherever she came from, she’s here now, and that’s all that I care about.”

Jonathan let out a very different sort of sigh, one of frustration. “All right then, if you insist.” Then, after a moment, he asked, “Did you…?”

Charlie looked at him incredulously. “Jonathan, please! She’s a lady!”

“Is she now?” he asked. “I mean, how would one know, what with no last name and all?”

“One can tell a lady without knowing her last name. Or her station, I might add,” Charlie retorted, crossing his arm against his chest.

“You’re right,” Jonathan responded, rolling his eyes. “I’m sure Aunty Meg is completely virtuous, no doubt.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” Charlie asked, slamming his hands down against the chair arms. Shaking his head in shock, he continued. “She very well might be. Not that it matters. I told you, I don’t care.”

“All right, then,” Jonathan said, standing, the threat of losing his cool completely bubbling near the surface. “I’m going to leave you. But if the Charlie I know should happen to show up, please tell him I’ll be calling on him for breakfast in the morning.”

Charlie crossed his arms again defiantly and looked at his friend rather sharply before saying, “You just don’t understand.”

“You’re right, I don’t understand,” Jonathan admitted, turning back to face his friend. After a moment, and a sigh of both frustration and contemplation, he continued, “But then, maybe I don’t need to. Maybe the only thing that matters is that she makes you happy. God knows you deserve it after everything you’ve been through.”

“I do deserve it,” Charlie agreed, his green eyes locked on something in the distance, his head nodding slightly with each word. As if regaining his composure, he then turned to look at his valet and added, “Oh, and she’s going to accompany me to dinner tomorrow evening, for your information.”

Jonathan’s eyes widened in surprise, his mouth hanging open for a moment before he managed to ask, “Oh, really?”

“Yes, it was Molly Brown’s idea, but I dare I say, I think it’s a good one.”

“And is Mrs. Brown going to help Miss Meg dress?” Jonathan probed.

“She is, actually,” Charlie confirmed.

Placing his hands on his hips, Jonathan replied, “Well, it should be quite interesting to see the reaction of the rest of the socialites when you show up with this unknown woman on your arm.
